Top tips for fundraising success

Set a fundraising target

Setting yourself a fundraising target is a great way to start. Be ambitious but remember that no amount is too small – every pound makes a difference.

Fundraise online

Make sure you create an online fundraising page. It’s the quickest and easiest way to raise money. Use our online fundraising checklist (PDF, 45KB – what is a PDF? ) to make the most of your online sponsorship page.

Gift Aid it

Remind your sponsors to tick the Gift Aid box when they’re making a donation. This allows Cancer Research UK to claim at least 25% back from the government on every donation and it won’t cost your sponsors a penny extra.

Fundraising tips

You can be as creative as you like with your fundraising, but here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Run in fancy dress – you could run for example as a Cancer Research UK scientist! Make sure you do a couple of runs wearing the costume before the race so you get used to how it feels.
  • Get people to sponsor you for the total distance you cover in training.
  • If you’re feeling really strong, say that anyone who donates £100 gets to add a pound of weight to your rucksack on race day.

Other tried and tested fundraising methods

  • Our marathon sweepstake form (PDF, 397KB) and half marathon sweepstake form (PDF, 1MB) are a great way to get people involved.
  • If you’re collecting sponsorship in person with a sponsorship form (PDF, 443KB), take the form everywhere you go and ask everyone you know to sponsor you.
  • Ask your boss about match-giving. Many companies will match the amount you raise from their charity fund – it's a tax benefit for them too.
